5 Practical Tips for Embracing the Home in Homeschool (Part Three)

One of the most beautiful parts of homeschooling is the freedom to create an atmosphere that feels safe, warm, and welcoming. Our homes aren’t sterile classrooms—they’re living, breathing spaces where memories are made, and learning is woven into everyday life.

This is Part Three of my Embracing the Home in Homeschool series, where I’m sharing simple, practical ways to lean into the cozy, life-giving side of homeschooling. Today’s focus is all about comfort—small shifts and gentle practices that can help your homeschool feel more like home.

Here are five ideas you can try with links to recommended resources:

1. Create a “comfort basket” for hard days

Some days are simply harder than others—whether it’s tears over math or a morning that just feels “off.” A comfort basket can be a lifeline. Fill it with cozy, calming items like lavender balm, fidgets, body socks, and guided breathing tools. Keep it nearby and invite your kids (or yourself!) to dip into it when the day needs a reset. Sometimes, just knowing the basket is there helps everyone breathe easier.

Here are a few of my favorite calming tools to include in your basket:

2. Keep a basket of slippers or cozy socks near your learning space

Nothing says “home” quite like cozy feet. By keeping a basket of slippers or socks near your homeschool space, you can encourage comfort in the simplest way. Kids will love the ritual of slipping into soft socks before settling into lessons, and you might even notice calmer moods and longer focus times. It’s a small touch with a big payoff.

Here are a few of my favorite cozy socks and slippers:

3. Swap chairs for beanbags, pillows, or play couch cushions

Who says learning has to happen at a desk? Try replacing hard chairs with beanbags, floor pillows, or even play couch cushions. Children often focus better when they can wiggle, sprawl, or curl up. Creating flexible seating options allows your homeschool to reflect the warmth of home while giving your kids the freedom to learn in ways that feel natural.

Here are a few fun and cozy options:

4. Use warm baked goods as a midmorning treat

There’s something magical about pausing midmorning to share fresh-baked muffins, warm bread, or cookies straight from the oven. Not only does it fill little bellies, but it also anchors your homeschool day in a spirit of hospitality. Baking together can even double as a learning opportunity—measuring, mixing, and timing all sneak math and science into your morning routine.

And if baking from scratch feels like too much, that’s okay! Keep it simple: pop store-bought cookie dough in the oven, warm pre-made muffins for a few minutes, or pull out brownies (homemade or not). Your kids won’t mind one bit—they’ll remember the joy of gathering together around something warm and delicious.

5. Play soft music or nature sounds during writing

Writing can sometimes feel intimidating or heavy for kids. One simple way to ease the mood is to play soft background music or gentle nature sounds. The right soundscape can transform writing time into a peaceful, focused experience. Experiment with instrumental playlists, classical music, or rain sounds until you find what resonates with your family.

Try searching for these suggestions or asking your Google or Alexa to play them:

  • café or coffee shop music (French, Italian, American)

  • movie or TV soundtracks (The Lord of the Rings, Pride and Prejudice, Bridgerton, Downton Abby)

  • classical music (Chopin, Mozart, Vivaldi)

  • instrumental versions of your favorite music genre

  • Alan Gogoll

  • Daniel Martin Moore
