About Bookish Adventure

What is Bookish Adventure?

Bookish Adventure is a literature-based homeschool curriculum designed to bring story, connection, and curiosity back to the heart of learning. Rooted in the Charlotte Mason philosophy and inspired by the joy of reading aloud, it offers cohesive unit studies that are both rich in content and gentle in approach.

Each four-week guide centers on a single, high-quality chapter book and weaves in cross-curricular explorations through history, science, geography, art, language arts, and more. These story-based units are thoughtfully curated to spark joy for both parent and child, making learning feel like an adventure rather than a checklist.

What can I expect?

Our curriculum is...

  • Fully planned- so you can open and go with confidence.
  • Flexible and adaptable - so you can follow your child’s interests without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Engaging for multiple ages- activities are layered with depth, ensuring younger kids are included while older children aren’t bored or held back.
  • Grounded in CM values—honoring the child as a person, nurturing wonder, and valuing living ideas over busywork.
  • Practical and parent-friendly—with printable checklists, planning tools, and gentle guidance that reduces decision fatigue.

Whether you’re new to homeschooling or simply seeking a more joyful, literature-rich path, Bookish Adventure offers the structure to stay the course—without sacrificing the freedom to make it your own.

Let the stories lead the way.

Is Bookish Adventure for you?

If you believe that learning is a lifestyle—one woven into daily rhythms, not confined to rigid checklists—then Bookish Adventure may be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

We know that stories have power. That books can shape hearts, spark imaginations, and become the shared language of a family. Our guides are built around rich, living literature because we believe that education rooted in story creates lasting connection—not just academic progress. You don’t need more busywork. You need something that supports you in creating a homeschool that feels like home.

At Bookish Adventure, we understand:

  • You want connection to come first—curriculum should serve the relationship, not the other way around.
  • You see your child as a whole person, with interests, intuition, and a unique learning pace.
  • You value beauty, peace, and discovery—without sacrificing structure or intention.
  • You crave guides that are both clear and playful: well-organized without being rigid.
  • You’re tired of extremes. You want practical support rooted in real life, not dogma.
  • Most of all, you want gentle reassurance that your homeschool doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s to be “enough.”

If this sounds like you, then yes—Bookish Adventure is for you.

Let’s build a homeschool filled with wonder, books, and delight—together.

Will this work for my educational philosophy?

Homeschooling offers families the flexibility to tailor education to their child’s unique needs and learning preferences. With a variety of homeschooling styles available—from traditional methods to unschooling, and everything in between—there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Whether you follow a structured, curriculum-based model or prefer a more child-led, experiential approach, incorporating Bookish Adventure guides can enhance the learning experience.

In this article, I have provided four sample schedules to show how you can use Bookish Adventure with your preferred homeschooling style. This will allow your children to explore the world of literature and discovery while fitting seamlessly into your personalized educational approach.

What subjects are covered?

Each Bookish Adventure guide brings learning to life through a rich mix of subjects inspired by a single beloved story. Inside every guide, you’ll find activities and explorations in poetry, science, history, geography, language arts, grammar and literary devices, copywork, arts and crafts, games, and even culinary adventures drawn from the book. It’s a joyful, story-centered approach that weaves together academics and imagination—perfect for sparking curiosity and meaningful family learning.

How to Choose a Level

Levels Offered at Bookish Adventure

Bookish Adventure Guides are created with family-style learning in mind. That means you can enjoy one read-aloud with all your children and explore the themes deeply without juggling multiple curricula. This approach encourages rich family discussions, shared memories, and a streamlined homeschool rhythm.

Each guide is designed with a “sweet spot” age range in mind, but they are easily adaptable for younger or older learners. The most important factor? Choosing a read-aloud that sparks curiosity and excitement in your family.

Bookworm Guides

Ages 4–6 | Gentle beginnings for young homeschoolers

Our Bookworm Guides offer a Charlotte Mason–inspired, play-based introduction to homeschooling for preschool and kindergarten. Centered around beautiful illustrated early chapter books, each guide includes age-appropriate activities in art, nature, early literacy, and hands-on exploration—perfect for cultivating wonder and connection without overwhelming structure. Think of it as a joyful on-ramp to learning, designed to meet your littlest learners right where they are.

Page Mage Guides

Ages 7–10 | Story-based units for curious readers

Page Mage Guides are month-long literature units built around a single middle-grade novel. Designed for cross-curricular learning, each guide integrates language arts, science, history, geography, and art—plus poetry, recipes, and even board game pairings! These guides are ideal for families who want to combine rich stories with playful academics in a way that feels seamless and meaningful.

Ink Drinkers Guides

Ages 11-12 | Story-based units for thoughtful readers

Ink Drinkers Guides are month-long literature units centered around powerful middle grade novels that explore deeper themes, richer language, and more complex characters. Like our Page Mage series, each guide blends language arts, history, geography, and creative expression—but with middle grade novels that explore deeper and more complex themes.

Below is a helpful chart showing how our guide levels can overlap and stretch to support a wider age range of children.

Homeschooling Multiple children

Bookish Adventure guides are designed to work beautifully for homeschool families with multiple ages, helping you create a cohesive and peaceful rhythm where everyone learns, reads, and explores together. Two simple methods make this possible:

Find Your Sweet Spot & Adjust

Choose a guide that falls near the middle of your children’s ages.

  • For younger kids: Be their scribe, simplify concepts, or guide them through hands-on work.
  • For older kids: Encourage independent research, writing, or deeper analysis.

Alternate & Adapt

Let each child choose one or two guides aligned with their level or interests, and adapt those activities for siblings. Then, choose a few family-favorite books to do all together. This creates a flexible mix of individual attention and collective learning.

Guides for All Ages

Under the "Shop by Level" menu, you’ll find a link to "Great for All Ages"—a special collection of guides featuring stories that are engaging and accessible for a wide range of ages. These books have universal appeal and age-appropriate content, making them ideal for families learning together. If you’re just getting started or looking for something the whole family can enjoy, this is a great place to begin.

How to Pick a Guide

Let your favorite books lead the way

Sometimes the most delightful learning happens when you follow a good story and see what topics naturally emerge. Don’t worry about covering everything or doing things in a specific order—just start with a book you love and let the learning unfold.

Here are a few of my favorite read-alouds:

  • Ra the Mighty Cat Detective
  • The Girl Who Stole an Elephant

  • Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes

  • The Year of the Dog

Alternate focus areas

One month, pick a story that weaves in science themes—like animal, space, or weather. The next month, dive into history or geography. Alternating subjects keeps things fresh and helps you cover a variety of subjects without losing momentum.

An example line-up could look like:

  • The One and Only Ivan (gorillas)

  • Ra the Mighty Cat Detective (Ancient Egypt)

  • A Rover’s Story (space exploration and technology)

  • The Bark of the Bog Owl (Medieval Times)

  • The Adventures of Miss Petitfour (weather)

What are your kids into right now?

Choose a Bookish Adventure guide that explores your child’s current interests. When you follow what already sparks their curiosity—whether it’s animals, mysteries, faraway places, or silly adventures—you create natural buy-in and excitement. Curiosity is the primer for a lifelong love of learning, and when children feel genuinely engaged, they’re more open to exploring new ideas, asking questions, and diving deeper. By choosing a guide that aligns with what they already enjoy, you’re building a homeschool experience that feels joyful, meaningful, and tailor-made for them.

FAQs

Is Bookish Adventure secular?

While the curriculum is not Christian-based, I am a Christian. Encouraged by my faith in Christ, I feel compelled to include and highlight the following in my guides:

  • The stories of marginalized people: I believe that every individual has a story worth telling, especially those who have been oppressed or silenced throughout history.

    • Luke 4:18 – "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free."

    • Proverbs 31:8-9 – "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."

  • The atrocities committed by America against the least of these: The history of injustice, particularly toward marginalized communities, is important to understand and address in order to bring healing and transformation.

    • Matthew 25:40 – "The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'"

    • Isaiah 1:17 – "Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow."

  • Womb to tomb: The value of human life is inherent from conception to natural death. This is reflected in the way we honor and respect all stages of life, not just the unborn.

    • Psalm 139:13-16 – "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."

  • That all people are made in the image of God and deserve love and respect: I strive to emphasize the dignity of every person, regardless of race, gender, or background, recognizing that every individual reflects God's image.

    • Genesis 1:27 – "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."

    • 1 Peter 2:17 – "Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor."

  • Justice should be pursued: Justice is a key biblical principle, and I feel strongly about promoting justice in all areas of life—social, economic, and spiritual.

    • Amos 5:24 – "But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!"

    • Isaiah 1:17 – "Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow."

  • Immigrants and refugees are not only welcome but are an irreplaceable part of our culture and experiences: They play a vital role in enriching our culture and society, and we have much to learn from them.

    • Leviticus 19:34 – "The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God."

    • Matthew 25:35 – "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in."

  • Different cultures, languages, and ways of life are valuable: Embracing diversity helps us grow and understand the beauty of the world God has created. All cultures have inherent worth.

    • Revelation 7:9 – "After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people, and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb."

When choosing the right Bookish Adventure guide for your family, it's important to feel confident and comfortable with the content you're bringing into your home. To help you make the best choice, I have added a new icon to each guide that contains religious elements. This icon indicates which religion is represented in the story, and each product listing includes a brief "Religious Note" explaining how that content shows up—whether it's part of the setting, a character's experience, or a central theme. Some families may prefer to include stories that reflect their own faith tradition, others may appreciate learning about different religious perspectives, and some may choose to use only secular content. All of those choices are valid. This transparency is designed to empower you to select guides that align with your family’s values, needs, and comfort level.

How long should I plan to spend on each guide?

Each Bookish Adventure guide is designed to span a 4-week period, offering a rich and engaging experience over the course of a month. However, the guides are intentionally flexible to accommodate a wide variety of homeschool rhythms, schedules, and term lengths. Whether your family prefers a slower pace or needs to adapt around travel, holidays, or life events, you can easily stretch a guide over more weeks. By using the additional activities and resources—like curated videos, podcasts, hands-on projects, and picture book recommendations—you can expand each guide into as many weeks as you'd like, allowing your family to linger longer, dive deeper, and fully savor each topic.

Is there a set order for using the guides, or can I choose what works best for us?

There’s no set order for using our guides—I always want you to do what works best for your family. You are not only capable of curating your child’s education, you should feel empowered to do so. You know your children best—you’re smart, deeply observant, and uniquely equipped to create a learning experience that fits your family’s rhythm and needs. That’s why our guides are designed with built-in flex days and plenty of open-ended activities—so you can adapt, adjust, and shape each one into something truly personal. Lean into that freedom—your homeschool doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s.

Is this a complete curriculum?

Yes, Bookish Adventure is a complete curriculum, except for math and phonics, that needs to be explored individually, depending on your child's current level. Each guide weaves together science, history, geography, language arts, copywork, and grammar through rich literature and hands-on exploration. With thoughtfully curated activities and resources, Bookish Adventure provides a well-rounded and engaging foundation for your homeschool.

Do I have to purchase the books that go along with the guides?

The only book you’ll need to purchase is the main read-aloud that each guide is centered around. This read-aloud is usually readily available at most public libraries, so you can often borrow it instead of buying. The additional suggested picture books in each guide do not need to be purchased—you can check them out from your local library or use the read-aloud links we provide when available. This way, you have plenty of flexible options to enjoy the stories with your family.

I placed my order–– now what?

Once you place your order, you’ll get instant access to your digital guide. A download link will be sent to your email, and the file will also be available anytime in your account under your purchases. Along with your guide, you’ll receive a helpful checklist to walk you through how to prepare and get the most out of your Bookish Adventure experience!

Will I receive a physical copy, or is it a digital product?

Bookish Adventure guides are digital products, giving you instant access to downloadable files you can use right away. We design our guides specifically for both digital and printed use—with handy hyperlinks embedded throughout for easy navigation on your devices, plus QR codes included for quick access to videos and resources when you print. Choosing digital allows you to print only the pages you need, customize the guides to fit your family’s preferences, and revisit the materials year after year without worrying about storage or shipping. Many families print at home using a color printer and simple binding options like a three-ring binder or report cover. For a more polished finish, local copy shops such as Staples or FedEx Office can print and bind your guides professionally, often at an affordable price. This flexibility helps you create a curriculum that works best for your homeschool lifestyle!

Will I receive updates if the guides change or improve?

Yes, you will always receive updates to any guides you’ve purchased. We’re currently in the process of refreshing and enhancing many of our older guides. If you purchase a guide now at its current lower price, you’ll automatically receive the updated version as soon as it's complete—no extra cost, no need to repurchase. It’s our way of making sure you always have access to the best possible version for your family.
