What Are Rabbit Trails + How to Follow them from a Book

If you have been homeschooling even for a short while, you have probably heard other homeschool parents mention the phrase “rabbit trails.” But what does it actually mean?

In homeschooling, rabbit trails are the paths of curiosity that emerge when your child takes an interest in a topic and wants to explore it further. A rabbit trail might begin with a single question during a read-aloud. Suddenly you find yourself checking out stacks of library books, queuing up podcasts, sketching maps, or baking a loaf of bread that ties into the story. One small spark leads to a new adventure in learning.

Rabbit trails remind us that homeschooling is not just about covering material. It is about cultivating curiosity. It is about following connections. It is about giving our children the gift of time and space to wander through ideas that matter to them.

How Rabbit Trails Grew Into Bookish Adventure

The very heart of Bookish Adventure grew out of this practice of chasing rabbit trails during our family read-alouds.

In my early years of homeschooling, we were diving deep into a read-aloud, and I would come across topics within the story that I thought would spark my children’s curiosity.

I found myself thinking, wouldn’t my children understand the story more deeply if we could pause and follow those threads of curiosity? Wouldn’t the characters come alive if we could explore the world they lived in?

So I started curating our own mini-adventures. While we enjoyed our read-alouds, I would choose one to three topics that connected to the story. From there I gathered resources to help us explore:

  • Library books about the topic

  • Short videos and podcasts that expanded the theme

  • Drawing lessons or art projects to capture the idea visually

  • Board games that connected to the time period or theme

  • Recipes mentioned in the book to enjoy at the end of the month during a family book party

I kept notes on scraps of paper, spreadsheets on my computer, and long lists of library holds. It was messy, but it was magic. Our read-alouds became rich with meaning, and my children began to see stories as a springboard into the wider world.

Eventually, those notes became something more organized. I realized that other homeschool families might love this approach, but not everyone has the time or energy to track down resources. That’s when I began creating Bookish Adventure Guides.

What You’ll Find in a Bookish Adventure Guide

Each Bookish Adventure Guide is designed to take one beautiful read-aloud and expand it into a month-long homeschool experience. Inside you’ll find:

  • One to three carefully chosen topics pulled directly from the story

  • Picture book lists and morning basket ideas, including poetry to memorize

  • Four weeks of curated activities, with space for reading, hands-on projects, and multimedia resources

  • A flex day that gives your family room to choose activities that fit your season of life

  • Extra links to videos, podcasts, and board games that enrich your homeschool journey

  • Recipe ideas inspired by the story, perfect for family book parties

  • Passages from the read-aloud to explore grammar and literary devices, with three levels of copywork pages

The rhythm is flexible. There is enough structure to guide you, but plenty of freedom to follow your own rabbit trails as well.

Why Rabbit Trails Matter in Homeschooling

When you give your homeschool permission to follow rabbit trails, you invite your children to learn with delight. Rather than racing through a curriculum checklist, you are slowing down to savor stories, ask questions, and make connections. Rabbit trails help kids see that learning is not confined to a textbook. It is woven into history, art, science, geography, and even the food on your table.

If you are curious about following rabbit trails but want a gentle framework to help you get started, a Bookish Adventure Guide is the perfect first step. You and your kids will see just how magical a read-aloud can be when it blossoms into a full month of exploration.
