Join twelve-year-old Homer under the cover of night as he flees Southerland Plantation with his little sister Ada, unwillingly leaving their beloved mother behind. The overseer is hot on their trail. Navigating through dense vines, hidden passages, and across a sky bridge, they stumble upon a hidden settlement named Freewater, nestled deep within the swamp. Within this community founded by freed slaves and freeborn youngsters, Homer forms new bonds, almost forgetting where he came from. However, upon discovering a danger looming over Freewater, he devises a strategy to locate his mother and protect his newfound haven.
