Overview of Sarah Plain and Tall

Princess Cora is sick of boring lessons. She's sick of running in circles around the dungeon gym. She's sick, sick, sick of taking three baths a day. And her parents won't let her have a dog. But when she writes to her fairy godmother for help, she doesn't expect that help to come in the form of a crocodile - a crocodile who does not behave properly. With perfectly paced dry comedy, children's book luminaries Laura Amy Schlitz and Brian Floca send Princess Cora on a delightful outdoor adventure - climbing trees! Getting dirty! Having fun! - while her alter ego wreaks utter havoc inside the castle, obliging one pair of royal helicopter parents to reconsider their ways.

About Bookworm Guides

This guide is a gentle, literature-based curriculum tailored to 4 to 6-year-olds. This age recommendation is a “sweet spot”; feel free to use our Bookworm Guides for younger or older children.

This guide uses an illustrated chapter book as a stepping stone from reading picture books to reading chapter books aloud with your children.

The guide features a four-day schedule for four weeks, covering math, language arts, copywork, play, poetry, videos, art, nature adventures, music, discussions, and book party ideas.

Bookworm Guides include a weekly overview of activities and detailed explanations.

Religious Note: Sarah’s quiet Christian faith is a source of comfort and strength throughout the story. Prayers and trust in God are mentioned in a way that reflects the historical setting without being overtly didactic.
